Description

Objectives:

  • Understand the basic mechanics, function, and background history of large language models and clinical artificial intelligence.
  • Know the cautions and concerns affecting the use of generative large language model artificial intelligence in medicine and recognize the current health policy and professional landscape around this emerging technology.
  • Learn specific applications of large language model artificial in clinical practice and be aware of near-future use-cases.

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 1 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity.

David. O. Shumway, DO is an internal medicine residency-trained, incoming aerospace medical flight surgeon and active-duty Air Force captain. Dr. Shumway is an AOA Training in Policy Studies (TIPS) fellow in the class of 2023, and a graduate of the inaugural cohort of the AOA Leadership Academy in the class of 2023. Dr. Shumway has also served on the Bureau of Emerging Leaders and Council of OMED, and writes frequently for The DO, where he originated the Resident Notebook column. Dr. Shumway has presented widely and published on the applications of large language model and clinical AI, most recently leading the AOA Board of Trustees Midyear Strategic Discussion as the keynote speaker on AI. Despite this, he is still probably best known for his love of Disney karaoke. He is married, with two children, and a Tri-color Pembroke Welsh Corgi.
