- Short Description:
- Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is a significant advance in bedside diagnosis and adjunct to the physical exam, yet a recent systematic review shows variable, but generally low use among general practitioners. The American Academy of Family Physicians recommended postgraduate curriculum guidelines for POCUS in family medicine.
With the very recent technological improvements in handheld, bedside ultrasound technology, family medicine physicians may have received minimal exposure or training on POCUS. This can lead to poor adoption of this technology in primary care practice. Topics covered will include: appropriate uses of POCUS, probe selection, how to obtain quality images, illustration of the ultrasound views needed to answer specific clinical questions, and hands-on practice in obtaining POCUS images and interpreting image results.
