There is a pressing need for implementing evidence-based suicide prevention in primary care. There has been a 36.7% increase in the suicide rate within the past 20 years in the United States. Primary care is the most likely point of contact for suicidal patients in the healthcare system and providers have limited training and time to thoroughly assess and address in a way in which they would feel comfortable reliability with the majority of patients. This lecture will help physicians identify the most important information they need to determine how to move forward with treatment.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Summarize key questions to ask to help guide assessment in suicidal or potentially suicidal patients.
- Determine the best steps for patients and improve confidence in developing a plan for safety.
