Carotid artery disease occurs when fatty deposits clog the blood vessels that deliver blood to your brain and head. Carotid artery disease develops slowly, and treatment of carotid artery disease usually involves a combination of lifestyle changes, medication and sometimes surgery. It is important that clinicians are aware of the current treatment options ranging from medical therapy to surgical therapy based upon data from the newest clinical trial and newer technologies commercially available.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the different treatment options for carotid disease.
- Discuss the increasing role of medical management and to properly select patients for intervention.
- Develop a basic understanding of the different options for surgical interventions, their risk profiles, and the benefits and drawbacks of each approach.
