Patent foramen ovale (PFO), the hole between the left and right atria of the heart is a common anatomical finding that can, in certain circumstances, be responsible for stroke and other clinical conditions. Physicians need to be aware of this when determining which patients would benefit from procedural management of PFO, due to its complexity.
At the conclusion of this session, the participant should be able to:
- Identify which patients should be considered for closure.
- Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of diagnostic tests.

Bryan W. Kluck, DO, FACC, FACP, FAHA, FSCAI, “Atrial Fibrillation Update,” and “Venous Insufficiency,” is a physician with Lehigh Valley Physician Group – Cardiology in Allentown, Pennsylvania. Board certified in internal medicine, cardiovascular disease, interventional cardiology, vascular medicine and endovascular medicine, he is also a clinical associate professor for DeSales University in Center Valley, Pennsylvania, and an adjunct faculty member at the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine (PCOM). Dr. Kluck is a graduate of Gettysburg (Pa.) College and a 1981 graduate of PCOM. He completed an internship at Cherry Hill (N.J.) Medical Center and an internal medicine residency and cardiology fellowship at Lehigh Valley Health Network in Allentown. A fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association, and the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions, Dr. Kluck is a member of POMA, the American Osteopathic Association and the Society of Vascular Medicine.
