Description

This presentation explores the multifaceted nature of the pain experience. This session will explore the Biopsychosocial Model of Pain, elucidating how biological, psychological, and social factors intertwine to shape a patient's pain experience. Attendees will gain an understanding of various psychotherapy techniques for effective pain management. Additionally, the presentation will demonstrate the application of cognitive-behavioral strategies and mindfulness in conjunction with osteopathic principles osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to optimize pain management and enhance patient outcomes.

1. Understand the Biopsychosocial Model of Pain Explain how biological, psychological, and social factors interact to influence a patient's pain experience.
2. Identify Psychotherapy Techniques for Pain Management Identify and describe psychotherapy techniques for pain management.
3. Apply Psychological Principles in Osteopathic Practice Apply cognitive-behavioral strategies and mindfulness with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to enhance pain management and improve patient outcomes.

The Iowa Osteopathic Medical Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians and designates this program for a maximum of 9 AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits commensurate with the extent of the physician's participation in this activity

Dr. Autumn Brunia is a psychiatrist working at DMU Behavioral Health Clinic and an Assistant Professor for the College of Osteopathic Medicine at DMU. Her clinic is accepting new patients ages 18 and older. She earned a business degree from Drake University and worked at The Principal Financial Group for five years before deciding to pursue medicine. She returned to Drake to earn a degree in biology and then graduated from DMU’s Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program. She completed her psychiatry residency at Broadlawns/UnityPoint, where she was chief resident and won the Des Moines Resident Teacher of the Year Award from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine for teaching medical clerkship students. Involved in student, resident, and physician wellness through her time at DMU and in residency, Brunia continues to promote wellness initiatives and access to mental health services to all Iowans.
