An Ocean Springs, MS native, Dr. Tom Recore graduated from Tulane University in 2001 and accepted an officers' commission in the United States Marine Corps. In 2005, upon his return from deployment to Iraq with the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion, he left active duty military service to pursue a career in medicine. He attended medical school at University of Mississippi Medical Center, graduating as a Medical Doctor in 2011. In 2015, he completed his residency in psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center where he served as the Executive Chief Resident. In 2016, he graduated from a forensic psychiatry fellowship program at the University of North Carolina and then returned to Mississippi.
After returning to Mississippi in 2016, Dr. Recore began working at Mississippi State Hospital (MSH) as a board-certified forensic and clinical psychiatrist, and he assumed a forensic liaison role with the state and local governments. He was appointed to Attorney General Hood's Mental Health Task Force, and created a jail-based competency restoration program funded by MSH to provide competency restoration services in Hinds and Madison counties, among others. He later assumed the role of the Director of Forensic Evaluation Service at MSH, where he implemented innumerable improvements to the conduct of forensic mental evaluations across the state. In this role, he also worked tirelessly to ensure a productive and collaborative relationship with the MS Circuit Courts and MacArthur Justice Center.
In the Summer of 2020, Dr. Recore was appointed as the Service Chief of the male and female adult chemical dependency units at MSH, and he continues to performs forensic mental evaluations, court testimony, and forensic liaison for the state of Mississippi.
Dr. Recore maintains board certifications in both clinical and forensics psychiatry, and is currently exclusively practicing as part of the medical staff at Mississippi State Hospital in Whitfield, MS.
Dr. Recore and his family reside in Rankin County, MS. His community of friends and family includes folks from Pinelake Church, Crossfit 27:17, and of course, MSH staff and their families. He's begun planting trees in Mississippi, and he hopes to see them continue to bear fruit in the upcoming years.
