Meeting Goals & Objectives:  The overall objectives of this program are to 1. Highlight the evidence of new, revised, and standard approaches, guidelines and tools for screening, diagnosis and treatment for a variety of medical conditions as it pertains to medical practitioners in various specialties, with an emphasis on primary care. 2. Demonstrate how social determinants of health and public health are applicable to clinical medical practice, and provide tools & resources for physicians to help them overcome these barriers to care. 3. Encourage & demonstrate the integration of osteopathic philosophy and principles into the practice of medicine; and 4. Provide information and tools related to professionalism, teamwork, communication and ethics to help physicians and other clinicians improve their practice of medicine. Each CME topic has its own set of learning objectives, which will be made available to registered attendees.

AOA CME Accreditation: The Maine Osteopathic Association is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association to provide osteopathic continuing medical education for physicians. The Maine Osteopathic Association designates this program for 16.5  AOA Category 1-A credits and will report CME and specialty credits upon successful completion of the activity. 

This education counts towards Maine state-specific Opioid Prescribing CME licensing requirements and the new 8 hour DEA CME requirement when renewing or obtaining your DEA license. The total hours in this education is one (1) Opioid Prescribing Credit

Dr. Morin graduated from the Maine Medical Center Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine fellowship program in 2008 and is presently employed by Southern Maine Health Care.  He has a special interest in COPD and for the past year or so has helped develop a lung cancer screening program for our institution.  He has been a committee member for a MaineHealth thoracic oncology work group since 2017.  That work includes developing successful lung cancer screening programs statewide.

Amanda is the Executive Director of the Maine Osteopathic Association. She has served the organization in several roles since joining the team in 2016. Nationally, she serves on the board of the Association of Osteopathic State Executive Directors (AOSED) and is Co-Chair of its CME Committee. She also has been honored to serve as AOSED’s representative to the AOA’s Bureau of Membership for the past two years. Prior to her nonprofit work, Amanda gained experience planning corporate and private events at several Maine events companies and resorts. She attended the University of Maine where she earned a BA in Communication and continued her studies to earn a Master’s in Communication while teaching
introductory courses as a Teaching Assistant.

Dr. Joel Kase is an osteopathic physician who throughout his career has beenactive in clinical practice, administrative operations, advocacy and policydevelopment, and medical education.

Dr. Kase has worked clinically in rural emergency medicine for 15 years, and prior to that, practiced the entire spectrum of osteopathic family medicine, including inpatient hospital and skilled nursing care, home health visits, obstetrics, and osteopathic manipulation. He is double boarded in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine.

Dr. Kase currently practices clinical medicine full time. He previously served as the Emergency Department Director for the VA Maine Healthcare System, and prior to that as the Director of Medical Education for the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Dr. Kase is a member of the AOA’s Bureau on Federal Health Programs, and currently serves as Chair of the AOA’s Council on State Health Affairs. He is also a Past-President of the Maine Osteopathic Association, and serves as the Chair of the Maine delegation to the AOA House of Delegates. A graduate of the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine, Dr. Kase completed a family medicine residency as well as an academic fellowship in obstetrics through the teaching hospitals of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Dr. Chuck Radis brings a singular perspective to his writing and is the author of Go by Boat, Island Medicine, Wildflowers of Casco Bay, and John Jenkins: the Mayor of Maine. Following graduation from Bates College, he committed to a career in osteopathic medicine after meeting a D.O. family practice bush pilot in Baja, Mexico.

Throughout his years as both a primary health care physician and later, as a specialist in rheumatology, Dr. Radis has published both in peer-reviewed scientific journals and in the popular press. He has written on empathy and kindness in medicine, the narcotic epidemic, and the logic of expanding Medicare for all Americans. As the founder and medical director for the Maine-African Partnership for Social Justice (www.mapsj.org) he has developed programs in the Kiryandongo United Nations Settlement in Uganda where he partners with refugee groups in innovative public health programs.  

For the last 40 years he has taught in the musculoskeletal system at the University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine, where he is a Clinical Professor of Medicine, and continues to enjoy his connections with our next generation of osteopathic physicians.

Julia McDonald is a full spectrum family medicine physician, an international humanitarian, a published writer, and an outspoken advocate for sexual and reproductive rights. They have worked for Doctors Without Borders since 2021 providing safe abortion care, obstetrical training and care, and newborn resuscitative training around the world. When working in the US, Dr. McDonald teaches at the Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and is the medical director of abortion services at Mabel Wadsworth Center in Bangor where they also coordinate  a statewide abortion training fellowship open to all family medicine residents in Maine and advanced practice clinicians.  Their dedication to primary care was recognized by the Maine Academy of Family Physicians when they were honored as Maine’s 2019 Family Physician of the Year and by the Maine Medical Association as the 2023 recipient of the Mary Cushman Exceptional Humanitarian Service award. They are a UNECOM alumna, a graduate of the Greater Lawrence Family Medicine Residency in Massachusettes, a fellow with Physician for Reproductive Health, and, of course, a proud member of the Maine Osteopathic Association.

Christina Lincoln came to Maine to pursue her degree in Osteopathic Medicine at the University of New England.  Upon graduation she began her residency in Family Medicine at Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where she developed an interest in both Hospital Medicine and Medical Education.  Upon completion of residency, she began her faculty role at Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine residency as the lead of the inpatient teaching service. Today she is joining us to share stories of the hospitalized patient.

Sean Neal is the Director of Grassroots and OPAC with the American Osteopathic Association and has more than ten years of political and advocacy experience with a focus on fundraising, government relations, and grassroots initiatives. Sean currently heads the AOA’s grassroots programs on both the state and federal, including DO Day on Capitol Hill.

In addition to his role with AOA, Sean also runs the Osteopathic Political Action Committee (OPAC) where he serves as the point person for all political campaigns. Sean was one of the original founders and board members of a physician-industry first Super PAC where he raised over $800,000 in less than 4 months. In addition, Sean developed a physician-industry first charity PAC match which netted $30,000 for charity.    

Sean is the co-chair of both the physician PAC Forum and Candidate Workshop where physicians are trained how to run for Congress. In addition, Sean is the chair of Innovate to Motivate, a program that fulfills the professional development requirements to earn or maintain the certified association executive credential.

Leora Rabin, MD is adult psychiatrist with specialty in perinatal mental health. She graduated from Brown University School of Medicine and completed her residency at University of Washington and is board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Dr. Rabin is the medical director of perinatal psychiatry at Maine Medical Center. She works with a multidisciplinary team empowering women to make informed decisions and participate in their treatment as they navigate some of life’s most difficult phases. Dr. Rabin is currently serving as Mental Health Clinical Advisor for the Maine Rural Maternity and Obstetric Management Strategies (RMOMS) grant program. Dr. Rabin supervises MMC Psychiatry residents and teaches Tufts medical students.

I am a local pediatrician, practicing for twenty years, and a lactation counselor for the last six years.  I graduated with a medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry in 2004, and then went on to do my internship, residency and chief resident year at Maine Medical Center/Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital.   I subsequently worked for twelve years as an office-based physician and inpatient newborn care provider at Midcoast and Southern Maine Health Center. 

Three years, I opened a private practice called “Personalized Pediatrics of Maine”.   I provide in-home support of newborns and breastfeeding mothers and families for the first two months of an infant’s life, before continuing this same care in the office.   After receiving training through the Postpartum Support International Workshop in the spring of 2021, I have been better able to support the mental health of mothers during their first year postpartum.

Jim is a compassionate, highly effective problem solver who is devoted to his patients and is a collaborative team player in his role of CMIO.

Jim has been a family practice physician for 34 years in central Maine. He has really enjoyed caring for his patients, newborn to geriatric. In addition, for the last 6 years, Jim has been chief medical informatics officer for 5 of the 10 Northern Light Health hospitals.  Jim has been a lead for the development and implementation of many of the NLH’s system projects and initiatives for EHR and digital experiences. He really enjoys assisting providers with adoption and performance. Recently he has collaborated on the development of a new adoption and performance process which has been embraced by providers and supported by data. Jim is Co-lead of the Clinical Stakeholder Group – which is responsible for guiding the effectiveness and delivery of IS services and solutions that supports workflow efficiency, the delivery of high-quality, safe patient care, and positive patient outcomes.

On a personal note, Jim is very fortunate to be married to Crystal, a high school librarian, for 37 years. They have two children, Eloise who is a Nurse Midwife and Cameron who is an ER physician. Jim also enjoys kayaking, for which he is a registered Maine guide.

I was born in Maine and grew up in Ellsworth and I am very proud of my local roots.  After high school, I went to the University of Vermont for an undergraduate degree and then practiced as a physical therapist for about four years before deciding to continue on to medical school.  I attended University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine and after graduation joined the Family Medicine Residency at EMMC.  After residency, I became employed by Blue Hill Family Medicine where I practice as a full time primary care physician for close to 10 years.  While working as a full time physician, I also joined leadership roles within Medical staff, first as the secretary/treasurer, then vice-president, then president.  I served the role of president for many years and enjoyed the connections of practice, hospital leadership, and board participation.  I also pursued a Master’s in Healthcare Administration through Walden University during this time.  In May 2020, I took on my current role which is the Physician Director of Primary Care at EMMC.  I did graduate with the MHA degree in February of 2020 as well.  In the three years since joining EMMC, I have focused on improvement of quality, informatic workflow, provider and staff satisfaction, and patient satisfaction.  I participate in various system committees as an active member or a chair related to informatics as well as the primary care service line.  I am the proud mother of two boys (16 and 11) as well as a step-daughter (17).  I enjoy spending my off time watching my boys participate in various sports, trying not to get too enthusiastic cheering on the sidelines.  I also love being on the water, joining my father lobstering, or my husband lobstering, tuna-fishing, and lobsterboat racing.

As a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Caroline brings to Maine-Dartmouth a knowledge of and commitment to the local community. At Colby she studied biology with a concentration in neuroscience and a minor in art. After graduating college Caroline worked as a clinical research coordinator, in the Memory and Aging Program at Butler Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island and then in the Pediatric Pulmonology Division at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, with cystic fibrosis and primary ciliary dyskinesia studies. Fate brought her back to Maine, where she spent a year working on the Maine Concussion Management Initiative at Colby College, prior to attending medical school at University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine in Biddeford, Maine. Following medical school, she returned to central Maine where she completed her residency in family medicine at MDFMR, serving as chief resident in her final year. She joined the faculty at Maine Dartmouth Family Practice in Waterville in the fall of 2020 and is thrilled to continuing doing full spectrum family medicine including obstetrics and pediatrics, as well as teaching medical students and residents. When not taking care of patients, she can be found with her children and husband around the lakes and woods of Maine.

Dr. Courtney Pladsen DNP, FNP-C has worked in the health care safety net for over 15 years in Emergency Departments and FQHCs. She is a Family Medicine Nurse Practitioner with a clinical focus on substance use treatment and harm reduction for people experiencing homelessness. She received her undergraduate degree from Boston College and her Masters and Doctoral degrees from Georgetown University where her research explored screening and addressing social determinants of health in primary care. From 2018-2022 she was a fellow with the RWJF Culture of Health Leaders program. Prior to starting as the Medical Director for MaineCare, Courtney was the Clinical Director at the National Health Care for the Homeless Council from 2020-2023. Courtney led the development of Maine’s first medical respite program, which opened in fall of 2022, in partnership with Maine Medical Center, Greater Portland Health, and Preble Street. While she continues to practice one day a week at Greater Portland Health’s Health Care for the Homeless Clinic, Courtney is passionate about improving health systems to provide equitable care for the most marginalized individuals in our community.

Puthiery Va, DO is Maine's Director of Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention, having joined the department in August 2023. Dr. Va has over 9 years of experience in public health, epidemiology, and program development, as well as a strong background in data analytics, grant writing, and collaboration. Before joining Maine CDC, Dr. Va served as the Director of Indian Health Service, where she managed and supported the delivery of health care services to American Indian and Alaska Native communities across the country. She also completed a two-year fellowship with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is passionate about advancing public health science and practice, and applying evidence-based solutions to address the health challenges and disparities faced by diverse and underserved populations. She holds a medical degree from the University of New England, and a master's degree in science from the State University of New York at Buffalo. She is fluent in French, and enjoys learning about different cultures and perspectives.

Thomas, Pentzer, DO hails from northern Idaho and attended PNWU-COM in Yakima, Washington. He recently graduated from the Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency and is currently an ONMM3 resident at the Maine-Dartmouth ONMM3 residency. Prior to attending medical school, Tom's allied health career included a decade of experience as a certified hyperbaric technologist and wound care tech, stints as a polysomnography tech and ED tech, and years of volunteer experience in EMS, search and rescue, and medicolegal death investigation. He currently serves on the board of the American Fascial Distortion Model Association and has assisted with multiple publications pertaining to the Fascial Distortion Model. In his free time he enjoys disc golf, listening to podcasts, and subjecting his family to dad jokes and experimental sous vide recipes.

Anne Sedlack graduated from the University of Vermont in 2013 where she majored in Anthropology and minored in Classical Civilizations and Studio Art.  After college, she served in AmeriCorps for two years at an alternative high school in Maine. She received her master’s degree in social work from the University of Southern Maine in 2017 and her law degree from the University of Maine School of Law in 2020. After law school, Anne clerked for the Hon. Joseph M. Jabar at the Maine Supreme Court.  And, before joining MMA, she worked in government affairs in a private practice in Maine. She is admitted to practice law in Maine.


Anne serves on the Public Arts Committee for the City of South Portland, the 4-H Camp & Learning Centers at Tanglewood & Blueberry Cove Board, and the Board for the Maine Child Welfare Services Ombudsman’s office. Kathryn Brandt is a 1997 alumna of UNE COM and received the Masters in Medical Education Leadership from UNE COM in 2011, and is board certified in Family Medicine and Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine. She has spent her career teaching osteopathic primary care, first at Maine-Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency from 2001-2012 and then at UNE COM as Chair of Primary Care.
She has a career long interest in the integration of osteopathic principles and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine into primary care and chronic disease management. She was the founding director of the Maine-Dartmouth NMM +1 Plus One Program and its associated multidisciplinary integrative clinic and has taught and advocated for these principles on a national level through the American College
of Osteopathic Family Practice and National Board of Osteopathic Medical Examiners.

She has also engaged in the quest for delivery system reform and the
depoliticization of medicine in many venues including the Maine Osteopathic Association, Ibis Health Services, and MaineCare State Innovation Model Initiative.
