Michael Bowen, M.D. is a practicing physician who is board-certified in both psychiatry and sleep medicine. He is a former active duty Navy psychiatrist who spent eight years treating Sailors and Marines in both the hospital and operational settings. His interest in sleep medicine stems from the recognition that disruption of sleep is very common and represents an important focus of psychiatric treatment. Sleep that is disrupted by psychiatric illness does not always resolve with other psychiatric symptoms, and if poor sleep is left unaddressed, it may become a risk factor for future mental health concerns.
Dr. Bowen received his undergraduate training anthropology at Harvard College and completed his medical training at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He completed his psychiatry residency at Naval Medical Center San Diego, where in his final year he served as a chief resident. After four years of psychiatric practice post-residency training, he began a fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Arizona College of Medicine, which he completed in July 2023. He has also received the Certificate of Additional Training in Sports Psychiatry from the International Society of Sports Psychiatry. He is a member of the American Psychiatric Association, the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and the International Society of Sports Psychiatry.
