Description

With recent data available for cases involving Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), physicians supervising Advanced Practice Providers would benefit from learning trends in these medical professional liability cases. In this lecture, our speakers will present data so that the learner is more knowledgeable about these significant medical factors to help avoid future liability. The speakers will also present risk management principles and strategies that can be applied to help mitigate risk for physicians who are supervising APPs. 

Learning objectives:

  1. Differentiate the scope of practice for Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants;
  2. Interpret claims data for Advanced Practice Providers;
  3. Evaluate the common allegations asserted in medical malpractice cases that include Advance Practice Providers; and
  4. Apply risk management principles and best practices to mitigate the risks of supervising these professionals.

The New York State Osteopathic Medical Society (NYSOMS) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide osteopathic medical education to physicians. Salvatore Volpe, MD, FAAP, FACP, FHIMSS, ABP-CI, CHCQM has over 30 years of primary care medical practice experience. He is board certified in Pediatrics, Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, Clinical Informatics and Quality Assurance. He serves as Co-Chairman of the Richmond County Medical Society Medical Informatics and Young Physician Committees and has served as Chairman of the NYS Medical Society HIT committee, and as a consultant to the NYC Primary Care Information Project and NYC REACH extension center.

Dr. Volpe has been the recipient of many prestigious awards, recognizing his commitment to creating a patient focused environment within his practice and his work in promoting the use of electronic health records and health information technology for quality improvement.  In 2009, Dr. Volpe’s medical practice became the first solo practice in the state of NY to achieve Level 3. In 2015, he accepted the role of Chief Medical Officer of the Staten Island Performing Provider System, and from 2017-2018, served as President of the Richmond County Medical Society. And in 2022, he published Health Informatics: Multidisciplinary Approaches for Current and Future Professionals.

Deanna Mirro Altmann, RNC is a Risk Management Consultant for the New York metropolitan area. Deanna graduated from NYU School of Nursing with a second Bachelor’s degree in Paralegal Studies with Business Administration from St. John’s University. During her career, she worked as a women’s health staff nurse and per-diem nurse on labor and delivery, post-partum, newborn nursery units and medical surgical units. Throughout her career as a legal nurse consultant, Deanna has reviewed and analyzed medical records and malpractice claims to identify liability issues and compliance with best practices and the standard of care. As a litigation paralegal she has worked in regulatory compliance and the defense of toxic tort claims.
