Objectives for Chronic Wound Management 21st Century Concepts: Angiosomes, Biofilms, and Microbiomes; Who Knew?: 

  • The physiology of the non-healing chronic wound  will be updated to expand the attendee understanding
  • The role of biofilms and the microbiome  of the chronic wound will be discussed for a better understanding of the shift from acute to chronicity in wounds
  • The current and future chronic wound strategies will be discussed and illustrated for a better understanding of the role of the wound care professionals in the management of chronic and complex wounds
  • Examples of complex wounds and their therapy  will be presented for discussion by the attendees

Allen Zagoren DO, MPA, FACOS, FACN is board certified general trauma surgeon with specialties in critical care nutrition and chronic and acute wound management. He has served as the Medical Director for the Center for Advanced Wound care and the Wound Care Collaborative at Unity Point Health, Iowa Methodist Medical Center Des Moines, IA, Iowa, since 2003.

He specializes in difficult and chronic wound management. This innovative program at Unity Point Health Des Moines, IA, evaluates and manages chronic and difficult wounds on referral from multiple states and referral institutions.

Dr Zagoren holds national prominence in his specialty areas with multiple published papers, texts and book chapters. His current research involves advanced tissue products for repair and healing of difficult and complex wounds.
