Osteopathic Health Policy Research: A Student-Centered Approach Addressing the Social Determinants of Health

The goal of this session is to help the learner better explain the value of a combined approach to health policy education and research for undergraduate medical students in regards to meaningful student resarch with opportunities to present and/or publish in peer-reviewed journals as well as practice-related competencies. Learners should evaluate the feasibility of the adoption of this or an equivalent approach for their professional setting (e.g. home institution, residency program).

At the end of the session, the learner will be able to:

  1. Outline the value of health policy education & research for undergraduate medical students.
  2. Explain the strengths of a combined (didactic & hands-on) approach to health policy education.
  3. Predict the effect of a combined approach to healthy policy education in preparing medical students with essential workforce requirements such as the ability to work with diverse patient populations and their specific needs.
  4. Evaluate the effect of health policy research presentations and publications on a medical student's chances for competitive residency program matching.
