Diabetes Performance Measures
Gregory Kosters, DO

A significant portion of our population lives with chronic conditions. Diabetes is one of the major chronic conditions we a osteopathic physicians manage. Performance measures for chronic conditions such as diabetes have been in development for over a decade and are now being used to guide not only how we manage diabetes, but how we are evaluated in our efforts as clinicians in improving the health of patients with diabetes.

This presentation will discuss the development of quality measures, how they are being used, and what osteopathic physicians should know about how we are being measured in our management of this chronic disease. At the same time, some diabetes clinical "toolkits" will be presented to help physicians achieve quality measurement goals

Objectives: Attendees will be able to understand:

  • The concept of population health and how it relates to improving the health of patients
  • The rationale of use of clinical measures of quality to assess provider performance
  • How the use of quality measures affects our work flow as clinicians
  • How to integrate the use of quality measures into the holistic view of patient care

The Challenges of Physician Mental Health
David Drake, DO

During this one hour presentation and discussion Dr. David Drake, Iowa psychiatrist, who has consulted with numerous physicians over the years will talk about the challenges that we as physicians have starting with the decision to pursue pre-medical studies  - through medical school acceptance  - internship and residency - different employment versus private practice opportunities - and into the move away from practice into ‘who am I now’ in retirement.  Stresses from insurance companies - reimbursement - changing technology - and demands by employers to see more patients per hour/day have taken a toll on each of us.  Through a presentation and discussion - physicians in attendance will review the importance of an identity outside of medicine as well as a social life that can be part of their current day-to-day life and into eventual retirement.

Objectives:

  • To review stress importance of stress management options - from yoga, meditation, biofeedback, exercise, getting outside
  • To review the importance of our relationships at home, family, friends to prevent social isolation
  • To review and discuss our own readiness for a change in professional identity as we move form full time practice to possible part-time to retirement

Dementia Update 2024 - Biomarkers and Antiamyloid Therapies for Early AD
Yogesh Shah, MD, MPH

At any given time, 8-10 % of the general population aged sixty and over are living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment. The impact of dementia is far reaching, as it affects not only the person with dementia, but also their family carers, the healthcare system and society. Dementia is often unrecognized, and there is an underuse of diagnostic assessment tools including newer biomarkers. Approximately 65 % of dementia cases are undiagnosed in primary care. The U.S Preventative Services Task Force recommends that clinicians assess cognitive functioning when a patient is suspected of cognitive impairment based on the physician’s observation or caregiver concerns. The objective of this session will be to discuss early detection using biomarkers and new antimalarial therapies.

Objectives:

  • Explain the cognitive continuum and describe Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI)

Defensible Documentation: Optimize Your Documentation to Improve Your Bottom-Line
Cynthia Penkala, CMM, CPME

Clear and concise medical record documentation has always been important. The updates on E&M coding that initiated on January 2021 have shown that the documentation in a medical record is more important than ever before. The documentation is now critical to providing patients with quality care, ensuring accurate and timely payment for the services provided, mitigating malpractice risks, and helping physicians and other providers evaluate and plan the patient's treatment and maintain the continuum of care. There’s nothing more frustrating than not getting credit for work performed. Physicians often leave large amounts of compensation on the table, because even though services were provided, insurance payers do not recognize the work due to suboptimal documentation. This seems to be the trend today.

This presentation will provide a refresher on the revenue cycle fundamentals and the basics of coding and billing.  It will also stress the role your documentation plays within the revenue cycle process.  Putting this all together to show the importance of defensible documentation can have on your bottom line.

Objectives:

  • Appreciate the role the Revenue Cycle plays in your practice.
  • Identify changes to the 2021 and 2023 E/M coding guidelines.
  • Examine today's medical billing denial & audit culture.
  • Comprehend the needed changes to make your documentation defensible.

The presentation will discuss the prevention or defense of denials and audits from payers.

Objectives:

  • Understand the Importance of Denials Management
  • Identify reasons for claim denials
  • Identify the Types of Audits
  • Learn Practical steps to minimize the impact of an audit
  • Learn some best practices to implement now to best avoid or defend against audits.
