Getting the Post-Partum Patient Back to Activity


Postpartum health care visits are focused on medical issues identifying hypertension, infection, and mental health concerns while largely ignoring the musculoskeletal health system Studies have shown women who exercise regularly may have a lower bmi and lead healthier lifestyles that may carry over to their offsprings.  This lecture will review the recent literature on safe return to exercise postpartum and the importance of inclusion of musculoskeletal care in postpartum office visit.

Following the completion of this lecture, the participant will be able to:

 

  1. Understand the importance of physician counseling regarding postpartum exercise.
  2. Identify common postpartum related changes that influence ability to run /exercise.
  3. Identify common musculoskeletal complaints in postpartum runners.
  4. List strength impairments that are commonly observed in postpartum runners.
  5. Discuss pelvic floor recovery postpartum and the influence of high impact activities on the pelvic floor.
  6. Describe postpartum return to run programs.
  7. Be aware of RED-S in the postpartum runner.

Mina DeMarco, DO

Dr. DeMarco graduated from the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine in Blacksburg, Virginia in 2011, Following medical school, she completed her Family Medicine Residency at Lewis Gale Hospital in Montgomery County, Virginia. She then completed a Sports Medicine Fellowship at VCOM Sports and Osteopathic Medicine. She currently is a Family Medicine Provider with UVA Health Family and Sports Medicine in Bristow, Virginia. She is board certified in Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.
